Understanding Natural Wood
Grain, Colour, Variation & the Natural Characteristics of Real Wood
Natural wood is unlike almost every other material you can choose for your cabinetry.
It isn't manufactured to have an identical colour, grain pattern or appearance from one piece to the next. Every board began as part of a living tree, and its appearance was influenced by species, growth, age and the conditions in which that tree developed.
That individuality is one of the reasons people choose natural wood.
It also means that selecting natural wood requires different expectations than selecting a manufactured material or solid-colour finish.
A sample can help you choose a species and finish. It cannot show you exactly what every cabinet door in your finished kitchen will look like.
Understanding that distinction before your cabinetry is built is important.
Natural variation isn't something that happens despite choosing real wood. It is part of choosing real wood.
No Two Pieces of Wood Are Exactly Alike
Look closely at two boards from the same wood species, and you'll almost always find differences.
The grain may run differently.
One may be lighter or darker.
One may contain more heartwood, while another contains more sapwood.
Natural markings may appear in one piece and not another.
Even boards cut from the same tree aren't necessarily identical.
Across an entire kitchen, these individual pieces come together to create the overall appearance of the cabinetry.
The goal isn't to make every piece of natural wood identical. It is to create a visually balanced finished project while allowing the genuine characteristics of the selected species to remain visible.
This is particularly important with species that naturally display significant variation, such as Hickory.
If absolute uniformity is your priority, natural wood may not be the best material for the appearance you're trying to achieve.
Understanding Wood Grain
Grain is one of the most recognizable characteristics of natural wood.
It is created by the structure and arrangement of the wood fibres and growth rings within the tree. Different species naturally produce different grain characteristics, but considerable variation can also occur within a single species.
Hard Maple generally has a finer, quieter grain.
Oak has a much more prominent grain structure.
Hickory combines noticeable grain with dramatic natural colour variation.
Walnut has its own distinctive movement and rich natural colouring.
But even within one species, the grain pattern on one cabinet door can look different from the door beside it.
That isn't necessarily a mismatch.
It is natural wood doing exactly what natural wood does.
Why Grain Patterns Change
How a board is cut through the tree affects the grain pattern that becomes visible on its surface.
Some pieces may show relatively straight grain. Others can display sweeping, arched or cathedral-like patterns.
This is particularly noticeable in species such as Oak.
Different cutting methods can also create very different appearances. Quarter-sawn or rift-cut material, for example, can produce grain patterns that look considerably different from more conventionally cut lumber. Quartered Oak can also reveal characteristic ray figure that isn't equally visible in every cut.
Unless a project specifically calls for a particular cut or grain selection, homeowners should expect some natural grain variation across the finished cabinetry.
Choosing a wood species means choosing its range of natural characteristics—not selecting one exact grain pattern and expecting it to repeat throughout the room.
Heartwood & Sapwood
Trees contain both heartwood and sapwood.
Sapwood is the younger outer portion of the tree. It is commonly lighter in colour.
Heartwood is the older inner portion and is often darker because of natural deposits that accumulate as the tree matures.
How obvious the difference is depends heavily on the species.
In some woods, the transition can be relatively subtle.
In others, it can be dramatic.
Hickory is an excellent example. Its pale sapwood can sit beside considerably darker heartwood, producing the strong colour contrasts for which Hickory is known.
Walnut presents a different relationship, with its heartwood providing much of the rich brown colouring associated with the species.
These differences aren't stains or manufacturing inconsistencies.
They existed within the tree.
And when both heartwood and sapwood are naturally present in the material selected for a project, that variation can remain visible after finishing.
Natural Colour Variation
Wood species have recognizable general colour ranges, but those descriptions should never be interpreted as exact colours.
White Oak isn't uniformly one shade.
Red Oak isn't necessarily red.
Hard Maple isn't perfectly white.
Walnut isn't uniformly dark brown.
Cherry doesn't begin or remain one consistent colour.
Individual boards can contain lighter and darker areas, subtle undertones and natural transitions in colour.
The finish selected for your cabinetry influences those characteristics, but it doesn't necessarily eliminate them.
In many cases, a finish can actually make certain grain and colour differences more noticeable.
That's why we encourage customers to evaluate wood species and finish together, rather than treating them as completely separate decisions.
Mineral Streaks & Natural Markings
Natural wood can contain markings that developed while the tree was growing.
Mineral streaks, for example, can appear as darker olive, brown or nearly black streaks that generally follow the grain. They are recognized natural characteristics of hardwood lumber rather than automatically being considered defects.
Depending on the species, you may also encounter other naturally occurring characteristics such as:
small colour streaks
pin knots or other permitted knots
irregular grain
swirls or figure
heartwood and sapwood transitions
other naturally occurring markings
Not every characteristic occurs equally in every species.
Part of choosing a particular wood is understanding which characteristics are normal for that species and deciding whether you appreciate them.

What About Knots?
Knots are one of the most recognizable natural characteristics of wood.
They occur where branches grew from the tree and became incorporated into the surrounding wood as the tree continued growing.
Whether knots are desirable depends on the appearance being created and the material selected.
Some cabinetry is intentionally designed around highly characterful wood where knots contribute to a rustic or natural appearance.
Other cabinetry calls for cleaner material where prominent knots would be undesirable.
The important distinction is that “natural wood” doesn't automatically mean “knotty wood.”
Species selection, material grade, door construction and the desired finished appearance all influence what natural characteristics are appropriate for a particular project.
A Small Sample Cannot Represent an Entire Kitchen
This may be the most important expectation to understand.
A wood sample is exactly that—a sample.
It can show you:
the species
general grain characteristics
approximate natural colour
how a particular finish interacts with that wood
the general appearance you can expect
It cannot show every grain pattern, colour variation or natural characteristic that may appear across an entire kitchen.
Imagine trying to understand the appearance of an entire hardwood floor by looking at one six-inch section.
Cabinetry works the same way.
A finished kitchen may contain dozens of doors, drawer fronts, panels and other visible components. Collectively, those pieces reveal far more of the natural range of the wood than a single sample possibly can.
Architectural woodwork guidance recognizes this problem as well: solid lumber within a species cannot simply be selected for identical grain and colour in the way manufactured surfaces can be controlled.
Whenever possible, look at multiple samples and completed projects, particularly when considering a naturally variable species.
Why Doesn't My Finished Kitchen Look Exactly Like the Sample?
Because the sample and your cabinetry were made from different pieces of a natural material.
The sample establishes the general direction, not an exact reproduction.
Lighting also matters.
A wood sample viewed under showroom lighting may appear somewhat different when installed in a kitchen with large windows, warm artificial lighting or different surrounding colours.
Countertops, flooring, wall colours and backsplashes can also influence how we perceive the colour of cabinetry.
This doesn't mean samples aren't useful.
They are extremely useful.
They simply need to be understood correctly.
A sample helps you choose the material and finish. It doesn't promise identical grain and colour on every finished component.
Wood Changes With Time
Natural wood doesn't necessarily look exactly the same five or ten years after installation as it did on the day it was installed.
Exposure to light and the passage of time can gradually alter its colour.
Different species respond differently.
Cherry is particularly well known for becoming deeper and richer in colour.
Walnut can gradually become lighter and warmer.
Other species may experience more subtle changes.
Industry hardwood guidance specifically recognizes that lighter species such as Cherry can darken with light exposure while darker Walnut can lighten.
Finishes can influence the rate and appearance of these changes, but they don't necessarily stop them.
This natural aging is part of the long-term character of genuine wood.
Sunlight Can Create Uneven Colour Change
Light exposure isn't always uniform across a kitchen.
Cabinetry near a large window may receive considerably more sunlight than cabinetry on the opposite side of the room.
An area that is consistently covered by an object may receive less exposure than the surrounding surface.
Over time, this can create differences in colour development.
If an object that has remained in one position for a long period is moved, the covered area may initially appear different from the surrounding wood.
This isn't necessarily finish failure.
It can simply reflect the different amount of light the wood has received.
Understanding this is particularly important with species that naturally undergo more noticeable colour changes.
Natural Wood Responds to Humidity
Wood remains responsive to its environment even after it has been dried, manufactured, finished and installed.
Wood is hygroscopic, meaning it exchanges moisture with the surrounding air. Changes in relative humidity therefore change the moisture content of the wood.
When surrounding conditions become more humid, wood can absorb moisture.
When conditions become drier, it releases moisture.
As its moisture content changes, wood can expand and contract.
Finishes help slow moisture exchange, but they don't eliminate it.
This is why maintaining appropriate indoor environmental conditions is an important part of owning natural wood cabinetry.

Seasonal Movement Is Normal
Central Alberta experiences significant seasonal changes.
The environment inside a home during a dry winter can be very different from conditions during warmer, more humid periods.
Because natural wood responds to those environmental changes, minor seasonal movement can occur.
You may notice small changes at:
joints
seams
door panels
mouldings
other natural wood components
Small amounts of movement don't automatically indicate that something is wrong with the cabinetry.
Wood-product research recognizes that wood in service continues to experience moisture-content changes, with seasonal changes being more significant than ordinary daily fluctuations.
Significant or unusual movement, however, should be brought to Woodmaster's attention.
Natural Variation vs. a Defect
Understanding natural wood doesn't mean that everything should simply be accepted because wood is natural.
There is an important difference between a normal material characteristic and a problem with workmanship, material performance or finishing.
Normal characteristics can include:
expected grain variation
natural colour variation
appropriate heartwood and sapwood differences
permitted mineral streaks and natural markings
gradual colour change from aging and light exposure
minor seasonal movement associated with normal environmental changes
Conditions that appear excessive, unusual or inconsistent with what you were told to expect should be discussed with Woodmaster.
If you're uncertain, don't diagnose the problem yourself.
Natural Wood vs. Manufactured Consistency
Neither natural wood nor manufactured materials are automatically better.
They provide different things.
Natural wood offers grain, depth, variation and individuality that manufactured materials are designed to control or eliminate.
Manufactured and solid-colour surfaces can provide considerably greater consistency when uniformity is the objective.
This creates an important question when choosing cabinetry:
Do you want every component to look as consistent as possible, or do you want the natural variation of genuine wood to contribute to the character of the room?
There isn't a wrong answer.
But knowing your own expectations before choosing the material can prevent disappointment later.
Choosing Natural Wood With Confidence
Natural wood shouldn't feel unpredictable once you understand what you're choosing.
Before making your decision:
Look at more than one sample.
Don't judge an entire species from a single small piece.Look at completed cabinetry when possible.
Larger installations reveal variation much better than samples.Consider the species and finish together.
A finish interacts with the underlying wood; it doesn't replace it.Think about how much variation you enjoy.
Hard Maple and Hickory provide very different visual experiences.Understand that your cabinetry will age.
Natural wood develops over time.Consider your home's environment.
Appropriate humidity and care matter to the long-term performance of wood.Ask questions before making your final selection.

Hard Maple — Fine grain, light natural colouring and a clean appearance.

Alder — Softer wood with a relatively fine grain and warm natural colouring.

Red Oak — Strong, recognizable grain with warm natural colouring.
Natural Wood Is Meant to Look Natural
There is a reason natural wood continues to be used in cabinetry even when more uniform materials are readily available.
It has depth.
It has texture.
It changes depending on the light.
It develops with age.
And every piece carries characteristics that came from the tree rather than a printing process or manufacturing pattern.
Those qualities require realistic expectations—but they're also what give natural wood cabinetry much of its character.
The goal isn't to remove every difference between one piece of wood and the next. It is to bring those individual pieces together into cabinetry that feels balanced, intentional and genuinely natural.
