A Smooth, Consistent Material for Painted Cabinetry

Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made from fine wood fibres formed into a dense, consistent panel. Unlike natural hardwood, MDF does not have visible grain, knots or the natural colour variation found in materials such as maple, oak or walnut.

This gives MDF its smooth, uniform appearance and makes it particularly well suited to cabinet doors where a consistent painted finish is desired.

Understanding MDF

Because MDF is manufactured rather than cut from a naturally growing tree, its appearance is much more uniform than solid wood. There is no heartwood, sapwood or grain pattern to consider when selecting the material.

That consistency is one of the characteristics that makes MDF useful in cabinetry, particularly when the design calls for a smooth surface rather than visible natural wood grain.

Appearance & Finishing

Solid-core MDF provides a clean surface that works particularly well with painted finishes. Rather than highlighting the characteristics of the underlying wood, as a stain does with natural hardwood, a painted MDF door creates a more uniform finished appearance.

The colour, sheen and finishing system ultimately determine the final look of the cabinetry.
